The club supports a wide variety of FIRST teams in 3 competitions. All are welcome to join, even if you do not have any prior experience! We will teach you because that is what we are here for!

FIRST Robotics Competition (9th-12th grade, starts January)

Active since 2007, Team 2980 is Oak Harbor High School's FIRST Robotics Competition team. The team's  high school members design, build, and program a fully-functional robot every winter to perform in competitions held in March and April each year. During their "off season", members can be found mentoring robotics teams at lower levels, participating in educational and outreach events throughout the area, and working on special projects in our community. Because of their outstanding work both with their robots and in our community, Team 2980 was awarded the prestigious Chairman's Award in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2024 (rebranded as the Impact Award), and the team earned trips to the World Championships in 2014, 2016, and 2018.

FIRST Tech Challenge (8th-12th, starts September)

FIRST Tech Challenge teams consist of students, grades 8 through 12, who design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge. FTC robots are smaller than FRC, no larger than 18 inches in length, width, and height.

Oak Harbor High School's FIRST Tech Challenge Teams are the first opportunity for 8th graders, incoming Freshmen and any other first-time team members to get hands-on experience designing, fabricating, assembling, wiring, and programming a robot from scratch. With guidance from older FRC team members, the FTC team produces a game-ready robot during their fall competition season. Armed with that experience, many FTC members then move on to the FRC team for their season.

There are three FTC teams that meet at Oak Harbor High School: 24252 (team primarily for those new to robotics), 22196, and 7676, in addition to Coupeville's team 32666, the 32-Bit Devils!

FIRST Lego League Challenge (4th-7th, starts September)

FIRST Lego League Challenge allows students grades 4 through 8 to engage in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering by building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. As part of Challenge, teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem.

There are currently teams at Hillcrest Elementary, Broad View Elementary, Oak Harbor Elementary, HomeConnection, Oak Harbor Intermediate, and Coupeville Middle School, as well as an all-district team not attached to any specific school. For questions, email whidbeyrobofll@gmail.com
