FIRST Lego League Challenge

FLL-RGB_Challenge-vert-full-color.jpg

FIRST Lego League Challenge allows students grades 4 through 8 to engage in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering by building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. As part of Challenge, teams also participate in a research project to identify and solve a relevant real-world problem

Team 19232 - Oak Harbor
Robo Pandas

Because we have yet not been able to place Lego League teams in all our local schools, our district-wide teams provide an opportunity for 4th through 7th grade students who do not have a team at their home school or cannot join their home school's team to still participate. We had enough interest this season to fill three district-wide teams who all met on Saturday mornings at Oak Harbor High School.

One of those teams, the Robo Wreckers, won the Robot Design Finalist Award at their competition.

Code Busters

Students at Hillcrest Elementary look forward to their 4th grade year when they can join Ms. DeWitt's Code Busters. Even though team members are only there for one year before they move on to the Intermediate School, the Code Busters keep building great projects and great robots.

After a few years away, Broadview Elementary restarted their FLL team in 2021-22, and continued this year with two teams, including the Okie Dokie Artichokie (can you tell we let the kids pick their team names?)

Phoenix

Based at Oak Harbor's HomeConnection home-school center, the Phoenix includes students from 4th through 8th grades HomeConnection has incorporated the robotics team into a class, and the extra time has paid off as the Phoenix reached the State Finals in 2018-19 and again in 2019-20.

The newest addition to our FLL family, Oak Harbor Elementary started a new team this year. Meet the Lego Legends, another group of 4th graders just starting on their robotics journey.

Chicken Tenders

FLL is so popular at Broadview Elementary that, even though only fourth graders are eligible, so many kids showed up that we had to either add another team or turn some kids away. Thank you Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Witeman for pulling double duty and coaching both the Artichokies and Tenders this year.

Collaborations with Other Schools

While most of our students are in the Oak Harbor School District, we happily work with any team that can use our help. We have provided mentors, support, materials, and practice areas for teams in other districts, and our annual FLL Jamboree welcomed teams this year from Anacortes, Coupeville, and Port Townsend.
